Mātauranga – knowledge and understanding

Kaiako – teacher

Tauria – student

Toi – art & design, can also refer to knowledge

Kōrero – a speech, narrative, or story

Pānui – announcement

Maunga – mountain

Moana – the ocean/sea

Awa – a river

Poroporoaki – farewell

Kawa – customs of a marae or wharenui

Wharenui – “big house”, usually the focal point of the marae -> “whare” generic term referring to a house

Mana – power, prestige, influence

Atua – ancestor, god or deity

Deity – a god or goddess, can also refer to a divine status

Whenua – refers to the land but also translates to placenta

Tangata whenua – refers to “people of the land”

Mihimihi – greeting or tribute

Te Tiriti o Waitangi – Maori’s Treaty of Waitangi, the one they signed

Hapū – subtribe/kinship group

Iwi – refers to tribe but more accurately a nation -> nationality

Tino rangatiratanga – self determination, autonomy, sovereignty

Whakairo – carved/carving

Kōwhaiwhai – painted scroll patterns

Tapu – sacred

Noa – ordinary, unrestricted. Opposite of Tapu
